Tobermory was founded in 1798 on the Isle of Mull, making it one of Scotland’s oldest island distilleries. It has also had one of the most turbulent histories in Scotch whisky: closed and reopened repeatedly, used as a naval canteen during WWII, and at one point used to store Isle of Mull cheddar - requiring a full clean-out before whisky production could resume. This cask was laid down in March 1996, during a particularly uncertain period under Burn Stewart ownership, when the distillery’s future was far from settled. It matured in a single refill hogshead for 29 years before being bottled in April 2025 at 46.4% ABV. The yield: 268 bottles. Tropical fruits on the nose, apricot and guava on the palate, a long finish of pink grapefruit, vanilla shortbread, and fading citrus peel. No chill filtration, no added colour. Part of Master of Malt’s 40th anniversary range.
